There are so many cozy places on Olkhon Island where you can fishing in the summer time using spinning or simple fishing rod and you will have a good catch. These places are located usually nearby the cliffy shores of the island. You can cast the line from standing on land or go by oar boat to the sea. The fishing-tackle and kinds of luring can be different: insects, caviar of Baikal fishes collected on the shores.

The morning time or afternoon when the sun is covered by clouds and the water surface is quiet, this is the best time for fishing of Baikal white fish. This fish prefer insects for eating and you can see water splashes and hear when it runs from the water to catch insects.

There is a special kind of fishing (called “ship”) very popular. You cast the line into water and go along the shore and the line goes into depth, there are a lot of small bays on Olkhon Island where you can fishing such way. The line has 2 or more fish-hooks and so you can take more fishes.

The under ice fishing of Baikal white fish is very interesting too. Two kinds of this fish inhabit in the lake: white and dark Baikal fish. Both dwell in the cliffy places of the island shores.

You make some hole in the ice 30—50 m away from each other and lure the fish for some hours, then the fishing starts.

The white catch out very strong if the fish height more than 1 kg. It’s a great fun if you take a big fish!

Net-fishing

In the summer time the nets are set by the fishermen in the Maloe Sea and on the other day the fisher are looking for catch. In the winter time the fisher make a big hole and put out the net. You can look a long time how the fisher take the net from the depth of Baikal and how beautiful look a lot of caught omuls, white fishes in it. And then you will taste delicious Baikal fish soup — “ukha”.
